Diagrammatic Logics: Past, Present and Future
نویسنده
چکیده
Diagrams have many practical applications and are used in numerous settings. Indeed, it is widely recognized that diagrams are a valuable aid to intuition and help to convey ideas and information in a clear way. Traditionally, however, logicians have viewed diagrams as informal tools and, thus, could not be a part of any formal argument; only symbolic logics were seen to fulfil this role. Recently, this perception was overturned in seminal work by Shin. This paper explores the evolution of diagrammatic logics, focusing mainly on those based on the popular and intuitive Euler diagrams. Also discussed are some challenges faced in the area, some of which are specifically related to diagrams.

Delivering the Potential of Diagrammatic Logics
Diagrammatic notations and reasoning have become a prominent focus of research over the last two decades. We have now reached a point where the techniques required to formalize diagrammatic logics and prove meta-level results, such as soundness and completeness, are well understood. Moreover, we have insight into what makes effective diagrams. However, the majority of progress has been on diagr...
متن کاملDiagrammatic logic applied to a parameterization process
This paper provides an abstract definition of some kinds of logics, called diagrammatic logics, together with a definition of morphisms and of 2-morphisms between diagrammatic logics. The definition of the 2-category of diagrammatic logics rely on category theory, mainly on adjunction, categories of fractions and limit sketches. This framework is applied to the formalization of a parameterizati...
متن کاملIt Takes Two to Tango: Customization and Standardization as Colluding Logics in Healthcare; Comment on “(Re) Making the Procrustean Bed Standardization and Customization as Competing Logics in Healthcare”
The healthcare context is characterized with new developments, technologies, ideas and expectations that are continually reshaping the frontline of care delivery. Mannion and Exworthy identify two key factors driving this complexity, ‘standardization’ and ‘customization,’ and their apparent resulting paradox to be negotiated by healthcare professionals, managers and policy makers. However, whil...

متن کاملA Diagrammatic Reasoning System for ALC
Description logics (DLs) are a well-known family of knowledge representation (KR) languages. The notation of DLs has the style of a variable-free first order predicate logic. In this paper a diagrammatic representation of the DL ALC– based on Peirce’s existential graphs – is presented and a set of transformation rules on these graphs provided. As the transformation rules modify the diagrammatic...
